Governors

At Arunside Primary School we have a dedicated Governing Body who support the Headteacher and all the staff immensely. The following eight elements of effective governance are found at the core of their work:

1. Getting the right people around the table

2. Understanding roles & responsibilities

3. Good chairing

4. Professional clerking

5. Good relationships based on trust

6. Knowing the school: data, staff, parents, children and community

7. Commitment to asking challenging questions

8. Confidence to have courageous conversations in the interests of children and young people

Whilst the Governors have the overall responsibility for the organisation, curriculum and financial management of the school, most of the responsibility and day to day running of the school is devolved to the Headteacher. Each term the Governors meet to discuss different school issues. Each member of the Governing Body is on either the Teaching and Learning Committee or the Resources Committee, both of which meet once a term.  In addition to these meetings each Governor has an 'adopted class' which they visit regularly.  They all attend many school events.

Meet the Governors

Arunside School - 2017 Governing Body

Bruce Glockling – Chair

Bruce joined the Governing Body in 2011 and became Chair of Governors in April 2016. He grew up and went to school in Horsham and now lives in Southwater, so is very attached to Horsham.

Bruce is the Head of Regeneration for a London local authority and a former Building Schools for the Future Project Director, with a long background in developing capital projects for education. He says many London schools would be very envious of the wonderful grounds and facilities at Arunside. As chair of governors, Bruce was able to work with the team of governors that managed the appointment of the new headteacher. Bruce is passionate about achieving the highest possible standards for the children at Arunside School and looking forward to supporting the school as it goes from strength to strength. Bruce is on the Resources Committee and Teaching and Learning Committee at Arunside.

Rhoda Hatton - Local Authority and Vice Chair

Rhoda was elected as an LA Governor to Arunside School in January 2010.  At work she is a School Business Manager at a nearby school as well as their Clerk to the Governors

As a governor at Arunside, Rhoda sits on both the Resources and the Learning and Teaching Committees, and also supports the Chair in her role as Vice Chair.  Rhoda has a keen interest in HR and Policies and often liaises with the WSGA and LA departments to ensure that the voice of governors at Arunside School can be heard.

Whilst undertaking a recent governor visit at the school, Rhoda considered how the learning environment is used by staff and pupils to demonstrate learning and celebrate achievements. There were many wonderful displays of the children’s art and written work throughout the school but Rhoda was particularly taken by the display boards that focused on ‘Growth Mind-Set’, a theme considered by all the year groups. The theory behind the displays was that children should hold a positive mind-set on activities that they aspired to learn. Rhoda reported that she liked the descriptions of activities that the children felt proud to have accomplished and the variety of tasks that they would like to master. Their underlying confidence in being able to do so came through strongly in their writing.

Diana Searle - SEND Governor

Diana was elected as a Governor in May 2008, and for most of that time had the honour of also being the Chair of the Governing Body.

Until April 2011 Diana worked for the local authority on the Inclusion Support Team - supporting all the primary schools in the Horsham area.  Her area of interest was and remains children who experience behavioural difficulties.

Debbie Lancastle – Clerk to the Governors

Debbie took over as Clerk in September 2009 and deals with all the administration for the Governing Body. She has worked at Arunside for 20 years as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant, supporting children mainly in Key Stage 1. She has been the School Bursar for the past 4 years.

Sylvia King

Sylvia is a qualified secondary school teacher who worked in West Sussex and Surrey for many years.  She is currently a Head of Programmes for a schools membership organisation based in London which supports schools in developing their teaching and learning.  One of her main focuses is education policy development and implementation.

She moved to Horsham 30 years ago and her children attended Arunside school.  She still lives locally and has five grandchildren,  ensuring that she is kept up to date with education fromthe 'user' perspective!

Lynda Lowe - Safeguarding Governor

After a long career in Education Lynda is now enjoying retirement.  During the latter years of her career she worked with the staff at Arunside as their School Improvement Partner and was always impressed with the high priority which they gave to ensuring the best possible provision for the children in their care.  She now feels privileged to be involved in the governance of the school and to having an oversight of its progress and development.

Lynda has lived in Horsham since 1970 and has one son who lives with his family in Brighton.  She enjoys walking and singing, is an enthusiastic member of the Horsham Rock Choir, and like all grannies loves spending time with her two grandsons!

Magdel-Marie Cummings - Parent Governor

Mags Cummings, Is a full time mum of three children at Arunside, has a background in architecture and is currently working towards an award in education. She sits on both Resources and Learning and Teaching committees and is part of the PTA.

Chris Jones - Co-Opted (Parent) Governor

Chris is a former pupil and now a parent to two young girls at the school and lives locally.  He is a civil servant delivering and managing IT projects within complex environments, liaising with both suppliers and partners. Outside of work and the school he is also involved with scouting in the Horsham district to continue to support young peoples development outside of school.

Chris joined the governing body in May 2015 and is looking forward with working with the team to deliver the double year groups.  He sits on both the Resourcing and Learning and Teaching Sub-committees.  Chris is currently supporting the school around their safeguarding policies and commitments.

Recently Chris has supported the year 4 students on their residential trip to lodge hill taking his wealth of scouting experience along to support staff . Whilst on the trip he was able to see the schools outdoor learning policies put into action as the children undertook activities around learning new skills, team building and challenging themselves. There was also the evidence of building confidence whilst undertaking something new and challenging and showing self-belief. He thoroughly enjoyed the experience and was proud of the way the staff support these pupils on experiences like this.

Victoria Coward - Parent Governor

Victoria joined the Governing body in 2015 as a parent governor, and has two boys who are both at the school. Before children, she worked as a senior training manager in the civil service, and now works as the training manager for a local software company during school hours. Victoria is also Chair of the Arunside school PTA - a role which she loves and has a lot of fun doing! In her spare time Victoria can usually be found ferrying her boys round to clubs, or sewing, and she is a keen member of a local book club. She is currently the English Governor, and sits on the Resource Sub-committee.

Tamara Murray - Parent Governor

Tamara Murray became a parent governor in late 2015. She has been a teacher of dance for over 20 years in independent schools as well as in adult education where she was in charge of the dance provision for a leading provider in London for several years. She currently runs her own dance school in North London as well as teaching an after school class at Arunside. She is also an active member of the PTA and has a son at the school too. Tamara moved to the Horsham area from London more recently in 2012 but has long had connections to the area as her grandmother lived in Maplehurst on the outskirts of Horsham and her sister also lived in Horsham too.

Nicole Packham - Teacher Governor

Nicole moved to Horsham with her husband and son in 1999. She came to Arunside in 2002 to teach for one year but is still here! Over the last 14 years she has taught predominantly in KS1 and loves teaching maths.

OFSTED December 2013 states:

Governors have a good understanding of the school's strengths and areas for development, based upon their monitoring.  Through good-quality training and personal expertise, they have developed appropriate skills to interpret data.  As a consequence, they support and challenge the Headteacher about the quality of teaching and pupils' achievement.  They receive appropriate information about the management of teachers' performance and see that teachers' pay rises are appropriately linked to pupils' achievements.  Governors manage the school's finances well.  They are fully aware of how the pupil premium funding is spent, and the impact this is having on the achievement of eligible pupils.  Governors ensure that the school meets national requirements for safeguarding children.  Policies are regularly reviewed to ensure that children are kept safe and free from harm.
